On November 6, 2023, Aaniiih Nakoda College (ANC) proudly became the first educational institution in the United States to sign the historic Buffalo Treaty.
This milestone reflects ANC's deep commitment to advancing Indigenous knowledge, cultural preservation, and ecological restoration. The treaty, first began in 2014, is a visionary agreement among Indigenous nations to restore wild bison to their ancestral landscapes, fostering both cultural and ecological renewal. Its primary goal is to provide knowledge, skills, and resources to support Indigenous communities in reintroducing wild bison to their lands, rebuilding vital cultural and ecological connections that have been disrupted over centuries. The treaty promotes “Buffalo Consciousness,” a systemic shift in how communities view and engage with the buffalo as a symbol of resilience and interconnectedness.
ANC's decision to sign the Buffalo Treaty underscores our mission to serve as a hub for cultural and environmental education, inspiring our students and community members to engage with these critical efforts.
In September 2024, President Sean Chandler traveled to Canada to join the celebration of the Buffalo Treaty’s 10-year anniversary. This gathering brought together signatories, supporters, and advocates to reflect on a decade of progress and to renew commitments for the future. The event highlighted the shared vision of Native nations across borders to restore the buffalo’s place in the landscape and in Indigenous cultures.
As we continue to champion the values of the Buffalo Treaty, our participation serves as a powerful example of how educational institutions can advance Indigenous-led initiatives. Through our ongoing efforts, we are helping to create a future where wild bison roam freely once again, reconnecting ecosystems and Indigenous communities alike. Signing the Buffalo Treaty is just the beginning of our journey. With a commitment to Buffalo Consciousness and collaboration, we are paving the way for systemic changes that honor the past, empower the present, and shape a sustainable future for generations to come.
