A recent video by Wellspring Media offers an intimate look into the hands-on experiences of interns at the ʔíítaanɔ́ɔ́nʔí/Tatag'a Buffalo Research and Education Center. This feature highlights interns collaborating with biologists in the field, engaging in activities such as collecting buffalo fecal samples for analysis. These real-world experiences not only enhance the interns' academic knowledge but also deepen their connection to the cultural significance of the buffalo within the Aaniiih and Nakoda communities
Established in 2021, the ʔíítaanɔ́ɔ́nʔí/Tatag'a Buffalo Research and Education Center at ANC stands as a testament to the institution's dedication to ecological research and cultural preservation.
The center's primary mission is to conduct ecological research on the Fort Belknap bison herd, aiming to deepen the understanding of these iconic animals and their habitats. This research not only contributes to academic knowledge but also plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage of the Aaniiih and Nakoda peoples.
Academic and Community Engagement
Beyond research, the center is dedicated to providing academic training and educational opportunities to increase community knowledge of sustainable practices. This includes mentoring interns, developing independent research projects, and fostering collaborations with both Tribal and external partners. Such initiatives ensure that the community remains actively engaged in the preservation and understanding of their natural resources.
At ANC, education transcends traditional classroom boundaries. Students have the unique opportunity to engage in hands-on research at the Buffalo Research and Education Center, participate in language immersion programs, and immerse themselves in experiences that honor and preserve their cultural heritage. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped with both academic knowledge and a profound connection to their cultural roots.
We are proud to offer our students the opportunity to work with the ʔíítaanɔ́ɔ́nʔí/Tatag'a Buffalo Research and Education Center because it exemplifies Aaniiih Nakoda College's commitment to blending scientific research with cultural preservation. Through its multifaceted initiatives, the center not only advances ecological understanding but also strengthens the cultural fabric of the Aaniiih and Nakoda communities.
